Tech envy

There's been a thunderstorm going on here for the last few hours, with a lot of lightning casting blue across the sky. There was even something pretty close once, a few hours ago -- close enough that I heard thunder not as Zeus' far-off rumbling but as the angry, stabbing cry we best know from sound-effects shops. (That was a little creepy. I got a little surge protector from Belkin when I found myself running out of outlets but I'd rather not find out exactly what the asterisk next to the "ten thousand dollar guarantee!" was referring to.)

Anyway, having had a long-standing affinity for the mystery and romance and beautiful colours of the night, I thought I should try my luck at getting a nice blue-backlit shot of the tree outside my window. Alas, predictably it came to nothing. "If only I had a camera with a massive lens," I thought, "and a ten-frame-per-second continuous drive mode. Then I could cast my net wide as Orion's bow and gather up all the colourful shells of the sea."

But, no, there's nothing to do but sigh and think nighttime thoughts, about a future of digital rebellion against analog transience.

My camera would accomplish this but we have so few thunderstorms that I rarely get that opportunity. Also they all happen when I am safely asleep.

A prior piece of wisdom was to unplug all of your electronics in a thunderstorm as any surge protector is inadequate in the face of a lightening strike on your line. Even the hydro substations have breakers tripped and serious damage so your $20 Belkin will be a pile of melted plastic. Off line back-ups.

I had lunch with Craig yesterday, an hour long catchup on all things family.

In other news, the lock on my door seems to work again. I don't mind telling you I was getting a little anxious.

Sounds like a new camera might be in order...when you start looking at the one you have and thinking "It would be nice if..." :)

I highly recommend mine but it has a relatively steep learning curve.

Nah, I've still got over 2 years left on the warranty on this one. I think I should at least wait that out. And anyway I don't think I'm at the right feature-improvement-to-price ratio, at least for the ones that are in my price range at all.

I had a "math moment" today. I had a bit of pocket lint I wanted to throw away. I was next to a bunch of cans in a cluster and was wondering which one was for garbage. I saw one had a sign reading, "NOTICE: TRASH ONLY," and I thought: "That doesn't answer my question."
