Zwischenzug: winter holidays

Today I used the word "toque" in a sentence and no one knew what it meant. Oops.

Still no snow here but it's below freezing in the evenings, e.g., right now.

The Bilbao tournament finished today (just a short exhibition) not in the total disaster augured by the first day; man only lost 4-8 (+1=6-5). Huzzah. Meanwhile, Sunday the World Cup starts in Siberia. Convenient for the 23 Russians (not "former Soviets") attending (out of 128, to be fair, but next highest I think is China or Ukraine at 9 or 10 each).

The town is shutting down for Thanksgiving, beginning tomorrow -- even Fine Library is closed, and Fine Library is open to one o'clock in the morning on weekdays (only eleven o'clock on Sundays, and seven o'clock on Saturdays). Blessings to the bureaucrat who decided they should still serve meals here during this time, including something labelled "holiday dinner." (They even did something like this last week, although I didn't recognise the turkey stuffing as such until I tentatively bit into it.) One imagines the only thing in a couple kilometers that won't be closed is the local 24-hour convenience store. -- and I thought living in North Vancouver was parochial.

* * *

Postscript, that night. I went to a concert the other night. I've been meaning to go to something, anything, since I got here, since generally they're free or very cheap for students, and probably they have some adequate talent. Various things intrude. This one took place at the local chapel, which is an enormous and impressive structure.

(In fact I was putting off writing about this because I took a few pictures and I was trying to figure out what to do with them. In the end I decided "nothing at all," because the pictures aren't any good. This is because (a) it was nighttime and quite dark; (b) I didn't feel good about wandering around to gawk and get the shots I might have wanted; (c) I didn't even try to make the best of the ones I did get. Shameful. Here's the best of the lot, and it's blurred and has distracting things in the foreground which I can't get rid of without (a) killing the perspective and (b) chopping off the column. Ugh.

Rear of Princeton Chapel

And of course since there's no light outside the magnificent stained glass windows looks slightly less impressive. Close parenthesis.)

They have an 8,000 pipe organ, which is what I went to hear, really. It was an organ concert, more or less, and it made quite a noise in there, to the extent that the building seemed to vibrate slightly during the most intense parts. I wished I was sitting about seven pews further ahead, which looked acoustically superior, but that section was marked "Reserved." It was supposed to be music of Bach, and anyway it was in a chapel, so they had a few cantatas, sung by a nice mezzo-soprano whose voice was given an ethereal reverberation. Also of note: chaconne for unaccompanied violin, which a colleague tells me is just about the most remarkable unaccompanied violin music ever written. ("Basically nothing notable happened after Bach until Bartok," he remarked. "Sounds less impressive if you don't know Bartok's dates," I quipped, thinking of the usual "from A to Z" rhetoric.) It's BWV 1004, if you're wondering, 'Chaconne from Partida No. 2in D minor'. I heard a fugue I hadn't before, BWV 532 in D major, which was unremarkable, to put it gently.

I trust it was a good concert?

In lighting conditions such as those, you want to set it for a big aperture (small numbered, 2.8 is the biggest my camera gets, I forgot what yours does) and a low shutter speed (1 second is usually ok, but I've had to use upwards of 1.5). The camera will not go to these settings automatically, because they require that you know what you are doing to use them.

One book I read suggested using the "human tripod" approach, which means down on one knee, place the hand holding the camera on the up knee and brace the camera with the other hand. Alternatively, find something solid (like a pew in this case) and place the camera on that. The human tripod is ok for the speeds above, but if you need to go to 2 or higher your hands shake to much. At that point definitely use an object.

Another thing you could try is to place the edge of the camera against on of those pillars and brace it against that.

The last suggestion is if you know you're going to be in low-light, buy a tripod and carry it with you. I bought one for $100 and it comes with a carrying case. I don't carry it with me to many places, but a few months ago Ted, Cindy and myself went for a walk in the park and night and I got some good photos using it and an 8 second shutter speed :D

Cya! :)

Ooooh... Pipe organs and the acoustics of worship spaces... Usually very reverberant due to the many hard surfaces found in such places. What might look like an acoustically optimal position may in fact not be - it's quite difficult to find a good listening position (imo) - you have to walk around and listen to find it.

Glad to know my dressing is appreciated, at least you know what it is!

I took 585 pictures while in China and will likely spend a reasonable portion of the next two weeks sorting them and deleting those that didn't turn out so well.

The organ should be played by itself, with 8000 pipes everything else is extra.

The aperture goes to 2.6, which is what I usually keep it at, with the exception of some of my gargoyles-in-the-blazing-sun pictures. Human tripod sounds good. I was trying to stabilise against myself (in a both-handed kind of way) but obviously I was slightly swaying (or not so slightly).

Glad you're enjoying the Bach. That CD is on my list to bring home this winter. I want to hear it on slightly more impressive speakers. One or two other things on that list (I haven't forgotten about the Ring).

They did one piece with organ, cello, oboe, and vocalist. I could hardly hear the cello after she finished tuning it and the vocalist was almost as badly drowned out. Bad idea.

I guess what you're telling me, Galen, is that if I found a floorplan you wouldn't be able to tell me where I should position myself in the not unlikely event I return? The building is mostly a big, long hall, like in the picture, but there's a part at the front few pews where it's much wider; the organ pipes are at the same position as the pulpit (and aft thereof). I was a couple rows behind this part and felt like I was 'in the shadow,' so to speak. I didn't get up and roam to test this hypothesis. (Also as I said there was the 'Reserved' sign.)

They're doing Handel in two weeks and although I've avoided Christmas-time "Messiah" for fear of unmitigated disaster it occured to me that if I'm not paying anything I should scope it out once.

Yeah, in that case 2.6 is a good aperature, and you should play with the shutter speeds. Also (if you can) when playing with these be sure to have the light histogram showing, as this will give you an accurate portrayal of the amount of light in the photo, where the LCD can be deceiving. Take a picture, check the result, fiddle with settings. Rinse and repeat until you like what you see. In theory from there you should be able to just shoot, but be wary of standing in a shadow or directly in a lamp, as you will have to change these settings in those cases.
