quivering through sun-drunken delight

Winter: "away is the blue bird"

It snowed last night, a couple of centimetres. Today the mercury hovers around freezing (water freezing, that is, not mercury). Two weeks remain in the term. I face with mild disquiet the prospect of carting luggage about with snow on the ground. (Postscript. The next day I woke up to a pleasant surprise: apparently the walks on campus are shovelled. I say 'surprise' because I don't recall UBC being particularly fastidious in this regard.) Saturday 17 December, in case you've not heard, is the day.

Last week, fearing the approach of snow which would destroy the opportunity for which I had waited, I took a moment to try to right an old wrong. The day was cloudless, and the sun encroached, but I had a notion that autumn's touch might yet be the vengeance of the earth I had hoped for. You decide: withered or unwithered? I think I'll have to try a winter series, too, dual to the picture of green.

An old summer photo, south and east side of Fine Hall. The thing on left is called "Five Discs, One Empty." You can't really see it but one of the discs has centre cut out.

Looking forward to seeing you soon and hear of all the adventures you have had. Your Dad and Ming are coming out today to tell us all about their trip to China. Currently snowing here and has done so for the last few days, also below Zero C.

The winter sure has been hard on those cats!

It is currently light snow and rain here, cannot make up its mind. Heavier snow this morning but nothing stays on the road to it will be smooth travel to the grandparents.

In your travels, try to take a minimum of luggage, enough to keep you occupied and clothed for a month. We ended up with one suitcase for the final two weeks of our travels.

I have heard that a change of underwear and a credit card are all you need to travel in a foreign country. And seeing as you presently reside in the US, Canada counts as foreign ;).

Nice pictures, and I'm looking forward to seeing you. I got your Christmas present already...:D (I'm having fun telling people that ;))

That's because he generally is the last to aquire his presents.

We met and had Japanese food for lunch today and Craig and I caught up on the past month and a bit of activities.

The question is...What did he get me?

Hmm, what could it be? I'm sure I'll never guess.

I've been meaning to write a little thing about books &c I've read over the past few months, partly because it would list a few things people might be correctly thinking of that I kaiboshed. Top of this list: there are two "new" Bester volumes, an anthology and his last novel ("cowritten" with Zelazny, who finished it after Bester died), which I got (anthology for the plane ride!); and I got the Star Wars DVD.

I wish I could say that I've figured out what to do with -- well, any of you -- but so far no success. Second year in a row with no epic poem, I'm sorry to say -- maybe more about that, too, another time. I've had the thought that I could get Amazon to ship some stuff to you, Papa, if possible -- but I'd have to figure out what to do pretty quickly to ensure it arrives in time.

I trust I haven't ruined any suspense by revealing that you're all getting books. (Sigh.) Not "Politics," but it's been a year now I'm thinking it's open season on "Nichomachean Ethics" at the dinner table, (which, I don't think I ever mentioned, was nice of you to 'steal', Craig, at the party).

In light of the Globe revealing all (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20051208.wparents1208/BNStory/Front), I guess there's no more shame in the situation. Maybe just less shame. -- Actually, just as much shame as I thought before. Curses.

So we should all take the article to heart and pay attention to others. Amazing conclusion!

Which party was Craig stolen from? I don't recall any in recent memory, but that may be the problem, those recent memories are fading fast. Good thing I have pictures.

I believe that Amazon will and does sell other things beyond books (expensive cameras would be an option but I doubt it), so the cat isn't out of the bag quite yet.

Once you get here we can hold extensive conferences on this and other topics, daunting thought, and include Craig in the musings.

Eight days and counting....

No, this was last year.

So, Craig, are you done everything, or what?

So, sometime in the next two weeks some packages will be showing up at your doorstep. No shaking the presents. (They might be fragile.)

How about Ultrasound, X-ray, MRI, or other non-invasive investigation methods?

Will they be coming gift wrapped or in plain brown (UPS) or white and red (Fedex) packages?

Six days and counting....

Well, I guess that would be OK. It's not like the titles are printed in ultraviolent (or x-ray or) ink.

"Plain brown," I think.

eheehe :)

I haven't even shaken the presents Cindy put for me under her tree yet. I've been very good :).

Actually I'm done all my Christmas stuph except for Mom, Ming and Cindy. Still working on them :).

You never did mention that, Balin. I had intended on reading it, but it remains still on my bookshelf with my collection of "smart books" some of which have been read, others not so much.

Four days and counting, we have made lots of plans so hopefully your time is flexible around Christmas.

After that you can relax until your return.

Hey, I've got all my shopping done but one item I'm still thinking about. The product of an afternoon with Amazon. What a useful site. They have a remarkable feature that recommends books for you based on (a) what you've bought (or put 'in shopping cart'); (b) which of the books it recommends you tell it you own; and (c) which of the books it recommends you tell it you're not interested in. Many of the pleasures of book-store-window-shopping from your desktop. And no, you're not all getting books. In fact, other than you two, no one is getting a book. I had some book I thought for a couple of people but on reflection I wondered what message it was sending, so I got them something safer instead. Phew. I'll just keep it for myself.

I'm not totally thrilled with the shipping costs, which are over 10%, but on the other hand I'm not paying GST, right? Not that I've done serious comparison shopping to determine conclusively blah blah. Is it good or bad that I'm earning and paying in US currency? It looks like one box (two items!) might be late, which I suppose is my fault for leaving it so late (last Sunday, on which weekend I assume no one at Amazon "warehouses" works, anyway). Oops.

My schedule, as ever, is yours to command. Please tell me, by the by, what if anything is happening on or about New Year's. Also if you could send me a letter reminding me of anything non-obvious I should determine to bring that I might miss otherwise -- e.g, you still have the pillow I left behind? spare towel or two? quilt (please say 'yes')? etc. I haven't forgotten the Ring.

I have sent an email.

No plans at our end for New Year's but Craig is likely involved in something.

The weather is cool, not cold and currently not raining, although that may change any day.

Lots of food planned and we got a desk for the room so you don't have to spend all of the time on the bed.
