Impatience: "nothing is beautiful but man alone"

Listening, as I sometimes do, to my favourite thing in the world, my disc of excerpts from Bach's Art of Fugue performed by Glenn Gould (piano and organ), I was struck by the desire to stop waiting. There's a thing whose time has come. I want to be in Princeton and I want to have my speakers back. If there's anything as silly as an extended farewell, it's listening to the unfinished contrapunctus through laptop speakers.

Funny how the oddest things can make conflicts pass to the conscious mind. Every now and then I need someone to tell me: "You've lost perspective!" These things happen. It's not hard to enumerate some reasons why: Bacchanalia, denial, tree/forest distinction, absurd justice, allzumenschlich syndrome, clawlessness, whatever. Make your own list. Don't feel compelled to share it, except with yourself.

It's very late to me now, since I didn't sleep very well at all last night. I don't expect to sleep so well tonight, either, or tomorrow. I think I will try to eat as little as possible, too. That might make it easier on me.

Judging, by the by, by the stunned silence, I believe there was remarkably little interest in the byline on 37. This is OK with me. I think it is healthy to write, every now and then, on something no one cares about, so long as it is not a pathetic indulgence (see above list). It shows some independence, fortitude. Gut. So, in which category does the rest fall?

People often don't respond to the posts that you wish they would simply because they are overwhelmed by the subject matter. In the cases where my journal does actually have interesting/important questions/discussion topics in it, people read it and think "I have nothing special to add to this discussion because I'm a lowly human being." when really I posted it _specifically to get reactions_.

Your case is different because not only is it an important/interesting post, but it is also well above a significant number of people's heads ;). I felt the stirrings of 342 in the back of my head, but it steadfastly refused to remember anything about rings until a few moments ago when I wrote down "back of my head". And I think that even had I remembered rings it would still have been beyond me. Remember, I'm very smart, but you still had to help me with my math homework ;).

It's true, I probably could have commented on your 37 post, but I just didn't feel like I had anything to add, particularly because I didn't remember the definitions of many of the things you were talking about.

Also, I was probably eating ice cream and math and ice cream do not mix in my experience.

This is all fair enough, and admittedly someone in the position of knowing that "ring" is a technical term but not remembering what it means is in a uniquely awkward situation. I guess I'm just surprised that no one took the opportunity to mention their favourite integer. It's not like Richard talking about his favourite lower semicontinuous measure on a topological vector space. ("For the laypeople in the audience, think of Lebesgue measure." Punchline of a "sporadic mathematical joke." That's another one.) People can be legitimately thought, even assumed, to have favourite numbers, most people have some number they like for whatever reason. I thought this was the natural extension. "I like 6 because it's shaped nice" is as acceptable as "because it's Pythagorean perfect" or "highly composite" or whatever. Just because mine is arcane is no reason to feel rationale envy.

Anyway, today is better and worse than anticipated. I was feeling sluggish this morning and yesterday but presently doing better. We'll see how it continues. That's the better. The worse is that it seems the chap at the courier place we visited the other day missed a bit of paperwork we needed to fill out. (Yes, even more.) I have a dreadful feeling that my packages are in dreadful danger.

integers...crap..um...these are whole numbers right??? right?? oh god. ! I fail!!doomed in the math I am.

I vaguly remember my professor getting excited about some numbers when I re-took math 11. but I dunno.

I like the number 2. why? cause its the number of partnerships. of combing things to make something. Duality and all that.

I like 3 cause its the number of the Goddess. Her 3 faces and 3 aspects.

I like the number 6 cause its my bday. a baby of the 6th month and the 6th day.

I think 9 is my numeraology number.. but I can't remember...

and thats all I have to say about numbers.

Yeah man, completely over my head! Hehe.

My favorite number is 8, that's my birthday. I think you see the difference here. Lol.

You know, I don't know what my favourite number is. I'll tell you what it isn't, though: e.

e: Everyone's second-favourite irrational number.
